The Ministry of Human Resource Development had launched an app that anyone can use to register for volunteer work at government schools. The scheme, called Vidyanjali, will be available in 21 States that are already on board this initiative.Volunteers, however, cannot supplement the work of teachers by aiding them in the classroom as the Right to Education Act does not permit this sort of teaching, an official said. They will only be allowed to help with non-scholastic activities such as reading and theatre. While the exercise is not aimed at assessing how these schools benefit from these lateral initiatives, it is hoped reading sessions helmed by volunteers would make a small difference.
Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje also congratulated the HRD ministry on the new initiative.
The scheme Vidyanjali tells children in Govt schools that they are not alone and are part of Team India. Smriti also said that Vidyanjali is a constructive effort to engage participatory citizenry.
