Former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's convoy was attacked by angry protesters on Thursday during his visit to the spot in Gaya where an LJP leader and his brother were shot dead yesterday.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
The angry crowd pelted stones at Manjhi's convoy and set fire to some vehicles, including the lead vehicle. They also set some police vehicles on fire. Villagers were angry with Manjhi for the delay in his visit.
Police had to fire a few rounds in the air to control the crowd, a few injuries have been reported. Manjhi is absolutely safe, but the attack broke the windows of his car. The wireless operator travelling with him also suffered injuries.
District officer Kumar Ravi, SSP Garima Malik and other officials reached the spot and tried to pacify the angry villagers, but to no avail. LJP leader Sudesh Paswan and his brother Sunil were shot dead on Wednesday during their campaign of Panchayat elections in Gaya's Dumariya. The assailants set fire to some vehicles of their convoy too.
The incident angered villagers, who demanded a visit from the chief minister. They kept the dead bodies next to Dumaria police station and blocked the main road in protest.
LJP minister Chirag Paswan is also expected to reach Dumariya on Thursday. He is slated to meet the families of the two victims.
