Just hours before the swearing in ceremony, newly elected AIADMK MLA SM Seenivel died of a heart attack on Wednesday morning. Seenivel had won the seat of Thiruparankundram during the 2016 assembly elections that concluded on May 19.
The 65-year-old is survived by wife, three daughters and a son. He was scheduled to take oath on Wednesday at the start of the first session of the 15th Tamil Nadu assembly. The legislator suffered a stroke last Wednesday, a day before election results were announced. He was admitted in a private hospital in Bibikulam, Madurai, and was recuperating there.
Over the weekend, some confusion ensued over Seenivel’s condition as several Tamil television channels reported his death on Saturday. However, doctors confirmed that the AIADMK member was in a “stable condition”.
Given his death, a by-election will likely be called for in Thiruparankundram constituency. AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa led her party to a resounding victory in the elections as party won 134 in the 234 constituencies.
Polling dates for two constituencies -- Thanjavur and Aravakurichi -- were postponed to June 13 after more than Rs 100 crore had been seized by the Election Commission.
