The PMO has pulled up the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for continuing to use the term viklaangjan (disabled) instead of divyangjan (persons with divine abilities) in its notifications.
Divyang is a favourite phrase of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he had coined it during one of his ‘Man ki Baat’ programmes. The Cabinet Secretariat on May 17 had issued a notification renaming Viklangjan Sashaktikaran Vibhag (Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities) as Divyangjan Sashaktikaran Vibhag — the word Divyangjan has been added in brackets to the English version. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had consulted six independent organisations dealing with disabilities and all states and union territories before the nomenclature waz changed.
The DoPT, in notifications issued earlier this month, had again used the term viklaang in one of its notifications. “The matter has been brought to our attention and we have asked for clarifications,’’ a PMO official said. Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot said the term divyang was something very close to Modi’s heart.
